I'd like to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported
our Guatemalan students with their donations and also to those who donated
their time to make this another successful year. Without the support of the
community, The Friendship School would not be possible and not one of our 75
students would be able to attend school. It is this generous community and
each of you that are making these children's dreams come true. I am so proud
and humbled by the kindness that we together have shown these students in a
village in Guatemala, so far from our daily lives. This school is truly built
on the kindness of children and the generosity of our community. While the amazing fundraising of Friendship Week is the major
effort that keeps this dream alive, we still need more to pay for all the
educational expenses of our 75 students and 6 staff members. If you have been
waiting for a time to make a donation, now is a wonderful time. Your donation
goes a long way in Guatemala and will directly impact the lives and dreams of
our students. Together, we are providing education to those who wouldn't have
the chance otherwise. Gracias and thank you,
Friendship
Week was held May 12-16th this year and what an event it was! At Rosa Parks
Elementary, students wrote letters to students in Guatemala, telling them
about their school and themselves. These letters will be delivered to the
students in Guatemala this summer. Friendship Week is our main fundraiser, so students participated
in a school-wide coin and dollar drive, raising over $2000 in coins, dollars
and checks. During their lunch hour, they also purchased hand-made friendship
bracelets from Guatemala, as well as t-shirts sporting the phrase "We
Make Dreams Come True" on the back. Many students joined in on our
Dinner Out events in which Ruby's, Canyons, and La Maragitas restaurants
donated a portion of the profits to our efforts. These students know they are
making a difference! To end the week, students went all out to make their hair the
silliest possible on crazy hair day Friday. That night was the 8th annual Friendship
Fiesta Dance and Silent Auction, held in the Rosa Parks gym. Students from
Rosa Parks as well as Emily Dickinson Elementary and Explorer Community
School in Redmond came together and boogied down to Mr. J.'s hip tunes,
bought small hand-made Guatemalan items, made worry dolls, and participated
in some paper weaving! Adults bid on some beautiful Guatemalan items
including woven tapestries and masks. Some amazing items were up for grabs
and the parents couldn't get enough of the fantastic selection.
Our
fundraising efforts during Friendship Week were featured in the May 24th
edition of the Redmond Reporter. READ

The
student sponsorship program is a great way for you to give to our students in
a personal way. For only $200, you can sponsor a student at our school
through 2008. Sign up now and receive a letter & picture from the student
you sponsor. You will have an opportunity to write a letter to them, send
them pictures, and touch their lives! It is also a great way to get your
children involved - for them to learn more about children in another part of
the world. The deadline for Student sponsorship is June 8th.

Doug and company will be traveling to Guatemala again this
summer. The trip will include business at the school in Momostenango but will
also include a visit to LaVega. The Foundation will expand its support for
education in this small village starting next year, creating education
opportunities for even more students. Are you interested in traveling to Guatemala in the future to
volunteer your time or expertise? We are always looking for volunteers,
especially those who speak Spanish! Send us an email at info@gfsf.org if you are interested in
traveling with us.
